Ignore VAT and the same ₦5,000 would look like 23.9 kWh — about 1.7 kWh more than you will actually receive. That is the gap between this calculator and most others.
For scale: 22 kWh runs a fridge-freezer for roughly 6 days, and nothing else. A household using 50 kWh a month or less qualifies for the lifeline tariff instead.

Search for the price of a unit of electricity in Abuja and you will be told, confidently and by sites that look authoritative, that it is ₦225. Or ₦206.80. Or ₦209.50. Or, on at least one calculator, ₦229.
All but the last of those come from the same table, and two of them are history.
NERC's July 2026 order for AEDC sets out its allowed tariffs in three columns: April 2024, May to June 2024, and July 2024 to July 2026. Band A at a household connection reads 225.00, then 206.80, then 209.50. The first column is the original April 2024 increase, the one that took Band A from about ₦68 to ₦225 and caused the row that is still going on. The second is the partial reversal a month later. The third is where it has sat, frozen, ever since.
So the sites quoting ₦225 as the current rate are reading the right table and the wrong column, two years late. The sites quoting ₦206.80 are one column closer and still wrong. ₦229 appears to come from nowhere we can trace.
The current household Band A rate is ₦209.50 per kilowatt-hour before VAT, and it has been since July 2024. The order says so in terms: the allowed tariffs for Band A "shall remain frozen at the rates payable since July 2024", and for Bands B to E since December 2022. That is not a forecast or an interpretation. It is the second sentence of paragraph 17.
Worth sitting with what the freeze means. Band B to E households have been paying the same nominal rate since December 2022 — through the currency's worst period in a generation and cumulative inflation well over 100%. In real terms their electricity has become dramatically cheaper, which is exactly what a subsidy is, and it is being paid for by the tariff shortfall the same order spends its first six pages arranging to fund.

How this is computed
Pump price ÷ generator efficiency. ₦1,299 a litre ÷ 1.5 kWh/L = ₦866 at best; ÷ 1 kWh/L = ₦1,299 at worst. The efficiency range is our assumption and is stated as a range because small petrol sets genuinely vary that much — a single figure would be false precision on the one input we cannot source. Oil, servicing and the cost of the generator itself are excluded, so the real gap is wider than this.
The pump price is the Abuja figure from our fuel page, observed 2026-08-05. When it moves, this comparison moves with it.
The generator is not a rival to the grid. It is the price of the grid not arriving.
The comparison every Abuja household eventually runs is grid against generator, and it is usually framed as a choice. It is not one.
At today's pump price, a small petrol generator produces a kilowatt-hour for several times what the same unit costs on any band — and that is before oil, servicing, the machine itself, or the noise. On the arithmetic alone the grid wins so heavily that the comparison looks pointless.
Which is the point. Nobody runs a generator because they think it is cheaper. They run it because the alternative at that moment is nothing. So the honest reading of the gap is not "the grid is better value" — everyone knows that. It is that the gap measures what unreliability costs. A Band A household that gets its committed 20 hours never pays the generator price. A Band D household on eight hours is buying the other sixteen at the generator rate, or doing without.
Put that way, the number below stops being a shopping comparison and becomes something closer to an outage tax: the premium a household pays for the hours the system did not deliver. It moves when the pump price moves, which is why this figure is computed from the fuel price on our own fuel page rather than typed in — when Dangote changes the gantry price, the cost of not having electricity in Abuja changes with it, and this page updates on its own.
One caution about the comparison, and it runs in the direction you would not expect: the generator figure below is too kind. It counts fuel only. It does not count engine oil, servicing, or the cost of the generator itself spread over its life — all of which are real and all of which make the machine worse. We have left them out because we cannot source them honestly, which means the true gap is wider than the one shown.

Your band is a property of your street, not of you
The most common misunderstanding about Nigerian electricity is that a band is something you are put in, like a tax bracket. It is not. A band is a property of the feeder your building sits on.
NERC's framework classifies each distribution feeder by the average daily hours of supply it actually delivers, measured over a month. Band A feeders are committed to a minimum of 20 hours a day, Band B to 16, Band C to 12, Band D to 8 and Band E to 4. Every customer on a given feeder pays that feeder's rate, whoever they are and however much they use.
Two consequences follow, and both surprise people.
The first is that your neighbour can pay a different rate than you for identical consumption, because a street can be split across two feeders. On the compensation list in this very order, Gwarinpa appears as "part of Gwarinpa, part of Jahi, part of Katampe" — one feeder cutting across three districts and, necessarily, leaving parts of each on something else.
The second is that you cannot choose. There is no form to fill in, no tariff to opt into. What you can do is establish which feeder serves you, check what it is committed to, and hold the DisCo to it — which is what the seven-day rule below exists for.
And the direction of travel is meant to be upward: the order obliges AEDC to "continuously ensure upward migration of customers from the lower service Bands to Band A service level". Being moved up means better supply and a higher bill at the same time, which is the trade the whole service-based tariff framework is built on.

The seven-day rule, and how to use it
What a downgrade is worth: Band A at ₦225.21 a unit against Band B at ₦68.10 — a cut of 70% on every unit, for supply you were not receiving anyway.
Buried in paragraph 19 of a scanned regulatory order is the most useful consumer right in the Nigerian electricity system, and almost nobody writes about it properly.
Paragraph 19(e): where AEDC fails to meet the committed service level on a Band A feeder for seven consecutive days, the feeder "shall be automatically downgraded to the recorded level of supply" under section 6 of Order NERC/2023/003. Automatically. Not on application, not at the DisCo's discretion.
What that is worth depends on where the feeder lands, and it is not small. A Band A household pays ₦209.50 a unit. A Band B household pays ₦63.35. If a feeder that has not been delivering its 20 hours drops to Band B, the same electricity costs less than a third as much — and the customer was, by definition, not receiving Band A service in the first place.
Two more obligations make the rule usable rather than theoretical.
Paragraph 19(c) requires AEDC to publish, daily on its website and by 10am the next day, a rolling seven-day average of daily supply hours for every Band A feeder. That is the evidence, and the regulator has already ordered it to be public.
Paragraph 19(d) requires that after just two consecutive days below commitment, AEDC publish an explanation and a restoration timeline.
So the practical sequence is: find out which feeder serves you, from your bill, your vending receipt or by asking your AEDC business unit. Watch the published rolling average, and keep your own log of outages with dates and times — a phone note is enough. If the feeder misses its commitment seven days running, the downgrade is already supposed to have happened; if it has not, you have the order, the paragraph number and the DisCo's own published figures to point at, and NERC's complaint process to point them at.

Seventeen Abuja feeders are already owed compensation
The seven-day rule is not hypothetical, and the proof is in the same document.
Appendix 2 of the July 2026 order is titled "Feeders for Compensation of Customers Only Due to Failure of Service". It names seventeen Band A feeders in AEDC's regulated area whose customers are to be compensated, with the streets each one serves, and the hours it actually delivered between the 1st and 21st of June.
They are not distant failures. Wuse II at 19.95 hours against a 20-hour commitment. Kubwa — Army Resettlement, Papal Ground, Aso Garden — at 19.71. Jabi, serving the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, at 19.57. Karu at 18.14. Several more, including the feeders serving the National Assembly Complex and the Supreme Court, are recorded as affected by transmission maintenance rather than given an hours figure, and their customers are on the list all the same.
Two things are worth noticing.
The first is how narrow some of the misses are. A feeder delivering 19.95 hours against a 20-hour commitment has fallen three minutes a day short. That still counts, and the regulator still directs compensation, because the commitment is what the higher tariff was granted for. A band is a promise with a price attached.
The second is that this list exists at all, in a public document, with street names in it. Nigerian electricity regulation is often described as an unaccountable black box. Here is the regulator naming the feeder serving the Supreme Court and directing a refund. Whatever else is true about the sector, that is on the record.
If your street is on this list, you are owed something. The order does not set out the amount here — that mechanism sits in Order NERC/2023/003 — and we are not going to invent a figure for it.

A salary of ₦500,000 a month is comfortably above the Abuja median, and this is what two fixed lines do to it. On the minimum wage the food line alone is nearly twice the whole wage — which is the arithmetic on the prices page. Each figure comes from a different authority that has never had to look at the others.
Common questions
How much is a unit of electricity in Abuja?
It depends on your band. Band A is ₦209.50 per kWh before VAT — ₦225.21 once 7.5% VAT is added. Band B is ₦68.10. The ₦225 and ₦206.80 figures circulating elsewhere are earlier columns of the same NERC table, from April 2024 and May–June 2024.
What band am I on?
Your band belongs to the feeder supplying your building, not to you. It appears on your bill and your vending receipt, and your AEDC business unit can confirm it. Band A feeders are committed to at least 20 hours a day, B to 16, C to 12, D to 8 and E to 4 — the band is a statement about supply as much as about price.
Why do I pay more than my neighbour for the same electricity?
Because you are probably on different feeders. Bands attach to feeders, and a street can be split across two. NERC’s own list describes one Abuja feeder as serving “part of Gwarinpa, part of Jahi, part of Katampe” — which necessarily leaves parts of each district on a different one. Neither of you can choose.
How many units will ₦5,000 buy?
On Band A, about 22 kWh with VAT included. On Band D, about 137 kWh — the same money, several times the electricity. Use the calculator above for your own figure; it includes VAT, which most do not.
Is a generator cheaper than the grid?
No, and not close — ₦866 a unit at best against ₦225.21 on Band A, counting fuel only. But nobody runs a generator thinking it is cheaper; they run it because the alternative is nothing. Read the gap as the cost of supply not arriving.
What is the lifeline tariff?
A protected rate of ₦4.00 per kWh for households using no more than 50 kWh a month — tariff class R1. Roughly a fiftieth of the Band A rate, and the ceiling is strict: it covers lighting, charging and a fan, not a fridge.
My token was rejected — what now?
Tokens are 20 digits and tied to one meter, so the usual causes are a mistyped digit or a purchase against the wrong meter number — check the receipt against the number on the meter itself. Tokens do not expire, and a used one cannot be reused. If the number is right, the vendor can re-issue against the same transaction, so keep the reference. Meters in Abuja include Conlog, Hexing and Mojec, and key-change tokens come from AEDC rather than the vendor. Beyond that this page cannot diagnose a meter — it only prices the electricity.
Can my band be downgraded if supply is poor?
Yes — automatically. Paragraph 19(e) of the July 2026 order: seven consecutive days below the committed level on a Band A feeder and it “shall be automatically downgraded to the recorded level of supply”. AEDC must publish a rolling seven-day average of daily supply hours per Band A feeder by 10am daily, which is your evidence. Band A to Band B takes a unit from ₦225.21 to ₦68.10.
Methodology and sources
Every tariff, committed-hours figure and rule on this page is read from ORDER/NERC/2026/063 — the July 2026 Supplementary Order to the Multi-Year Tariff Order 2024 for Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc, issued by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and effective 1 July 2026. Rates are Table 3, band hours are Appendix 1, the service rules are paragraph 19, and the compensation list is Appendix 2.
That order is a scanned document with no machine-readable text, which is worth stating because it explains why so much of what circulates online is wrong. An automated reader returns nothing from it. Anyone building a tariff page from software alone falls back to whatever secondary sites say, and the secondary sites are quoting a two-year-old column.
Who the order covers: paragraph 15 states that NERC issues the end-user tariff for customers in the yet-to-be-transitioned states under AEDC's franchise — the Federal Capital Territory and Nasarawa State. AEDC also distributes in Niger and Kogi, which have moved to their own state regulators, so their tariffs are set elsewhere. For a site about Abuja this is the fortunate case: the order is exactly the right geography.
Rates are stated before VAT. Retail electricity is a standard-rated supply at 7.5% under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 — it is not in the exempt list at section 186, the zero-rating at section 187 reaches only the wholesale legs (generator to grid, transmission to DisCo), and it is not among the supplies whose collection is suspended under the Eleventh Schedule. The token calculator adds it, and shows the figure both ways so you can check against your own receipt.
Two things on this page are ours rather than the regulator's, and are labelled wherever they appear. Generator efficiency is given as a range of 1 to 1.5 kilowatt-hours per litre for a small petrol set, because real machines vary that much and a single figure would be false precision on the one input we cannot source. Appliance wattages are typical nameplate values, not measurements of your appliance.
